The hormone abscisic acid (ABA) triggers stomatal closure and stress responses in plants. ABA is rapidly turned over in plants, limiting its effectiveness in long term applications such as protection of wine grape plants from midwinter freeze and spring frosts. This talk will focus on the development of tetralone ABA, an analog of ABA designed to be resistant to enzymes that degrade ABA in plants. A practical, scalable synthesis from natural ABA will be described as will recent results from collaborators’ lab and field studies.
