SUMMARY:Tetralone ABA: Protecting Plants from Environmental Stress
DESCRIPTION:The hormone abscisic acid (ABA) triggers stomatal closure and stress responses in plants. ABA is rapidly turned over in plants\, limiting its effectiveness in long term applications such as protection of wine grape plants from midwinter freeze and spring frosts. This talk will focus on the development of tetralone ABA\, an analog of ABA designed to be resistant to enzymes that degrade ABA in plants. A practical\, scalable synthesis from natural ABA will be described as will recent results from collaborators’ lab and field studies. \n\nWho: Dr. Sue Abrams\, Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada in Saskatoon\nWhere: Virtually via MS Teams (click here)\nWhen: April 9th from 1:30 – 2:30 PST\n\n  \nMicrosoft Teams Need help? \nJoin the meeting now \nMeeting ID: 266 927 489 643 \nPasscode: cv6vy3Pc

SUMMARY:Advanced Plant Breeding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to take your gardening and seed-saving skills to the next level? Join FarmFolk CityFolk for an in-depth\, advanced plant breeding workshop where you’ll learn how to enhance genetic diversity\, improve crop resilience\, and develop strong\, locally adapted varieties. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener\, seed saver\, or aspiring plant breeder\, this workshop will provide you with the tools and knowledge to create thriving\, genetically diverse crops tailored to your growing environment. \nIn this online workshop\, we’ll dive deep into the following advanced plant breeding techniques: \n\nMass Crossing for Genetic Diversity:\nDiscover how to intentionally cross different plant varieties to increase genetic diversity\, improve resilience\, and select for desirable traits like pest resistance\, flavour\, and hardiness. We’ll cover best practices for selecting parent plants\, timing your crossings\, and managing pollination to avoid unwanted genetic traits.\nLandrace Farming & Genetic Adaptation:\nLearn how to create and maintain landrace varieties—open-pollinated\, locally adapted plants that evolve through natural selection over generations. We’ll explore how to build resilient\, diverse plant populations that are well-suited to your region while ensuring genetic health and avoiding inbreeding.\nBiennial Seed Production for Crops Like Beets & Kale:\nMaster the art of growing biennial crops\, such as beets and kale\, for seed production. We’ll teach you how to manage the lifecycle of biennials\, including overwintering plants and ensuring they flower and produce high-quality seeds in the second season.\n\n  \nClick here for more info or to register!
