SUMMARY:BCWGC - R&D Meeting: June 20\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Grafting Climate Resilience: Consideration of Rootstock and New Varietals for Transitioning Climates \nBarbara Hall\, UBC Okanagan \nWe are faced with the daunting task of rethinking our vineyards. Current research for climate change and resilience of grapevines considers the contribution of the rootstock for managing the plant’s response to stress conditions. While we assess the suitability of the current varietals that shape our wine region\, an assessment of the currently available rootstocks is beginning at UBCO. Many newer rootstocks have been developed that are resilient to heat\, cold\, drought\, saline soils and other stresses. Barbara is collaborating with UBCO to bring new varietals and rootstocks into the Okanagan. The process of sourcing new planting materials is time consuming but the investment is likely to improve resilience from the perspective of the plant for better resilience in the vineyards\, better grapes and better wines.

SUMMARY:Stronger Together - BCFGA Rally For Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Join the BCFGA on Tuesday afternoon\, 2:30pm at Gyro Park in Osoyoos\, for a pro-agriculture rally. Bring your whole family to this family-friendly event. We’ll have water and frozen treats available. Bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets\, if you like! \nThis is not a protest\, but rather a gathering of those who grow tree fruits and grapes in our valley and those who support them. We have invited public officials and community members to come and show their support\, and mingle and listen to the growers\, to understand what sort of supports are needed during these trying times. \nOur message is simple: Stronger Together. The extreme weather events and the plight of farmers goes beyond politics – we need support from consumers and non-partisan solutions and collaboration from all decision-makers. Everyone is invited to show their support\, because together\, we are stronger! \nIf you would like to volunteer your time to help out at the event\, the BCFGA staff would greatly appreciate the extra hands!
