SUMMARY:BCGA Spring Workshop - Irrigation & Contracts
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for the BCGA Spring 2026 Workshop to dive into irrigation tips and contract tricks! \nBCGA Spring 2026 Workshop: Irrigation & Contracts \nGood decisions around irrigation and grape sales can make the difference between a successful season and a stressful one. This practical workshop brings together two key areas where growers can reduce risk\, improve outcomes\, and strengthen the long‑term health of their vineyards and businesses. \nIn the first part of the workshop\, we will explore why irrigation is so important for vine health\, fruit quality\, and yield. Growers will learn how too much or too little water affects vines\, how different soil types hold and move water\, and how rootstock choice influences water use. The session will also introduce irrigation tools and systems from Verdi\, Lumos\, and Southern Irrigation\, helping growers think about solutions that fit their own soils\, vines\, and growing conditions. \nThe second part of the workshop focuses on why contracts and long‑term relationships with wineries matter more than ever. With changing markets and increasing uncertainty\, growers often carry the greatest risk when there is no clear agreement in place. This session will explain what contracts do\, how they can help protect growers\, and the difference between one‑time sales and longer‑term arrangements. We will also discuss why trust\, clear communication\, and reliability are so important to wineries\, and what questions growers should be asking before the season begins. \nThe workshop will conclude with a question and answer session\, giving participants the chance to share experiences\, ask questions\, and learn from each other. Growers will leave with practical insights they can apply in their own vineyards to improve decision‑making\, reduce risk\, and build more resilient operations. \nStay tuned for registration details! Free for BCGA members\, $20 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Herbicide Demonstration Trial
DESCRIPTION:Following strong interest at the Southern Interior Horticulture Show (SIHS)\, please join Pearl Agricultural Consulting for an on‑farm herbicide demonstration trial in Summerland. The boom design\, first introduced to growers during the SIHS Boom Sprayer Calibration Workshops will be showcased again during this in‑orchard trial. \nDetails: \n\nWhen: May 19\, 2026 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM\nWhere: 17614 Matsu Drive\, Summerland\nWho: Pearl Agricultural Consulting\n\n\nThe demonstration is being conducted in a high‑density apple orchard with established weed pressure and active root sucker growth. The trial aims to compare the efficacy of Glyphosate (Roundup Transorb) applied at a 1% rate under different water volumes\, as well as pre‑emergent herbicides Prism and Chateau tank‑mixed with Glyphosate. In addition\, post‑emergent options for root sucker control\, including Aim\, Ignite\, and Phoenix (non‑commercial demonstration product)\, are being evaluated. \nPre‑emergent treatments were applied using a hand boom on April 17\, 2026 (Timing A)\, with post‑emergent sucker control applications planned for mid‑May (Timing B). The May 19\, 2026 field day will provide attendees with a side‑by‑side view of the treatments\, allowing growers and industry to visually compare product performance and water volume effects under real orchard conditions. \nSpread the word\, grab a coffee\, and come check it out in the orchard on May 19! Registration not required.

SUMMARY:Basic First Aid Training for Growers
DESCRIPTION:BCFGA is exploring organizing a Basic First Aid Attendant training course for growers and farm staff in the Okanagan. The training would be delivered as a full-day session during the week of April 20\, with the final date and location confirmed in early April based on pre-registration numbers. \nThe course is intended to help farm operations meet provincial workplace safety requirements\, which require employers with more than one employee to have a trained first aid attendant on site. Workplaces with 1–19 employees require basic first aid training\, while those with 20 or more employees must have an attendant with intermediate training. Maintaining valid first aid certification also supports compliance with Food Safety audit requirements. \nParticipants who successfully complete the training would receive a Basic Level First Aid certificate and would also be eligible to claim 1.0 Category A PAC point. The estimated cost is $150 plus GST. \nMembers who are interested must pre-register by March 27 to help determine demand and confirm the training. You may signal your interest for either or both of a course in Kelowna or Penticton using the links below. Please ensure your full name and email contact are included. Invoices will be written once a date is confirmed and must be paid by Monday\, March 30th in order to secure your place. \n\nKelowna Session: Between April 20-24th\, from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM – REGISTER HERE!\nPenticton Session: Between April 20-24th\, from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM – REGISTER HERE!\n\nPlease be sure to bring your PAC number with you to receive your PAC points!

SUMMARY:Agrivoltaics as Sustainable Farming Solution in the Fraser Valley
DESCRIPTION:This event\, hosted by the Clean Energy Research Group at SFU alongside our partners\, introduces agrivoltaics as a viable path for climate resilience and farm viability in BC. Agrivoltaics is the practice of integrating solar panel systems overtop farm field production to create a dual-yield of both electrical power and agriculture. With back-to-back years of devastating weather\, agrivoltaics offers a model for crop protection\, renewable energy\, and improved water and energy efficiency without sacrificing existing farmland. \nCurrent research demonstrates that this pairing of agriculture with energy systems can help: \n\nPreserve Farmland While Maximizing Its Efficiency (Dual Use)\nReduce Drought and Hail Damage From Climate Change On Our Agriculture Sector\nCreate Green Jobs In Rural Farming Communities\nHelp Transition The Agriculture Industry From Fossil Fuels To Renewable Energy\nStimulate The Economy Through Decentralized Revenue Generation\n\nAt this event you will:  \n\nHear lessons from cutting edge research and practical examples of Agrivoltaics\nLearn about opportunities for incentives and the current barriers for agrivoltaics adoption in BC\nJoin in discussions about the technical aspects of agrivoltaics and agrivoltaic greenhouses\n\n  \nTime: March 31st\, 7-9 pm \nLocation: The Reach Gallery Museum\, 32388 Veterans Way\, Abbotsford\, BC V2T 0B3 \n  \nRegister today!
