SUMMARY:Tire Collection Event (Free)
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, the Regional District of Central Okanagan is hosting the annual free tire collection event. Residents across the region are invited to drop off any old or unused tires on or off rims that may create a habitat for mosquitoes as they collect standing water. The event is free of charge and there is no limit on the number of tires individuals can drop off. \nThe event will take place on Saturday\, September 7\, 2024\, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Okanagan College at 1000 KLO Road in parking lot #17. \nThis is the seventh year that the regional district and its mosquito program contractor Duka Environmental Services Ltd are teaming up with Tire Stewardship BC for this free event. \nTire Stewardship BC is a not-for-profit society that manages BC’s tire recycling program. Eco fees paid by consumers purchasing tires are used to pay for transporting and recycling scrap tires in environmentally responsible ways rather than having them take up space in landfills. For information on programs offered by Tire Stewardship BC visit: www.tsbc.ca

SUMMARY:Young Agrarians Farm Tour & Potluck
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a Farm Tour and Potluck at Medley Organics in Summerland\, BC! If you’re curious about what land matching and sharing is all about – or just want to check out what your local farmers are up to – join us for the event! Come out to connect with other farmers and food lovers\, share a delicious potluck meal and learn about mixed vegetable production. \nWe’ll enjoy a farm tour from leasing farmer Jerome Gagne\, who is the owner and operator of Medley Organics. In 2019\, Jerome was matched to ten acres of land on a long-term lease through the B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP). Jerome will talk about the challenges of new farm start-up\, his extensive experience with leasing land and how to develop your niche business market. He’ll also discuss how to ‘lease-proof’ your farm\, and show off his unique barn that can be deconstructed and moved! \nThere will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions about land sharing\, mixed vegetable production and farm start-up. If you are a new or experienced farmer who wants to learn more about farming on leased land\, we hope to see you there. The day will wrap up with a potluck and informal time to socialize with other farmers and farm-curious folks. \nClick here to register!  \nClick here to learn more!

SUMMARY:BCWGC R&D SERIES - THIRD THURSDAYS!
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Advancements in Diagnostics Supporting Clean Plant Program for Grapevines and an Introduction to Genome BC \nDr. Sudarsana Poojari\, Brock University \nGrapevine virus disease management has been identified as a top priority for long-term sector sustainability.  Losses of over $23 million per year are currently incurred by grape growers due to reduced yield of infected grapes and increased fruit rejection by wineries.  To replace the currently infected acreage and meet ongoing renewal of vineyards the industry needs access to 6.7 million domestically produced\, virus free vines/year. \nBy implementing a high throughput sequencing method at the CFIA\, the costs of analysis is reduced\, and analysis time is reduced for commercially valuable varieties imported into Canada as well as audit testing from certified foreign sources destined for commercial planting. This single genomic test will speed up the release of virus-free grapevine material from about three years to one year or less\, providing rapid access to valuable new varieties.  Domestically\, the Canadian Grape Certification Network (CGCN) is commercializing high throughput sequencing at the Clean Plant Program at Brock University for the certification of propagation material in nurseries and grapevines obtained through CPH\, and for monitoring of production vineyards. \nGenome BC will highlight the goals and objectives of the CLEANSED clean plant material project. Dr. Sudarsana Poojari will provide an overview on the importance and recent advancements of different virus detection methods with emphasis on the recent advancements in infrastructure supporting the Clean Plant Program at Brock University. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:BCWGC Third Thursdays: R&D Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Influence of temperature and heat-stress mitigation strategies on grape quality in British Columbia vineyards – Year 1 \nBy: Simone D. Castellarin\, Nik Wilson\, Sarah Davis \nHeat stress events are a new reality facing wine grape production in many wine regions. Heat stress can cause severe and long-lasting damage to grapevines by impairing physiological processes (e.g.\, photosynthesis) and grape quality. Understanding how these events impact grapevine productivity and wine quality is a top priority for the sector. In this seminar we will present the results of several experiments conducted in controlled environments during the summer 2024. We compared the physiological responses of eight grapevine varieties cultivated in BC to simulated heatwaves\, and we studied the effect of heat stresses to grapevine physiology and the berry composition when in combination with water deficit. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Lab to Land: Advancing water and soil research for agricultural resilience
DESCRIPTION:Join the BC Agricultural Climate Action Research Network online to connect with researchers\, farmers\, agrologists\, and policymakers from across the province. Grow your network and participate in thought-provoking discussions on adapting to climate change challenges from farm to landscape scales. This multi-day workshop offers presentations\, panels\, and networking sessions exploring projects and research that are advancing agricultural resilience: \nJanuary 15: Explore collaborative approaches to drought resilience across the province. Featured projects address adaptation from the farm to watershed level and include research from on-farm management to Indigenous co-governance.\nJanuary 16: Dive into research investigating how soil supports ecological and community resilience. Discuss farmer-led research to evaluate soil management practices and learn about collaborative soil stewardship integrating Western scientific and Indigenous methodologies. \nThanks to funding by the BC Ministry of Agriculture & Food\, the workshop is available at no cost. SUMMARY:BCWGC R&D Series - Third Thursdays!
DESCRIPTION:Remote sensing technique to determine intra-vineyard variations in vigour and fruit quality \nWith Simone D. Castellarin\, Pin Jui Chen\, Christopher Mark \n  \nWithin vineyards\, the variation in soil characteristics results in different vine vigour and physiological responses\, leading to variability in yield and grape quality. Precision viticulture strategies can potentially manage these intra-vineyard variations. \nIn a study conducted over multiple seasons in Gewürztraminer and Riesling vineyards in the Okanagan Valley\, researchers investigated the variation of vine performance (vigour\, nutrient status\, photosynthesis\, yield) and grape quality (TSS\, TA\, pH\, aroma). This presentation will include the results of the study and strategies for using remote sensing technology as an efficient approach for estimating vine vigor and aromas in vineyards\, enabling the production of distinct wine styles under selective harvest. \nClick here to register!
