Managing Grapevine Trunk Diseases in Australia and New Zealand

Dr. Mark Sosnowski

Government of South Australia, Dept. Primary Industries and Regions

South Australia R&D Institute – Adelaide

The main trunk diseases that impact grapevines in Australia and New Zealand are Eutypa and Botryosphaeria dieback, reducing vineyard productivity and longevity. Vines are predominantly infected through pruning wounds and colonise wood, causing dieback and eventual vine death and, in the case of Eutypa dieback, stunting and yellowing of shoots and leaves. Cultural practices, such as the timing of pruning to avoid rainfall and periods of spore release, and position of pruning cuts, can reduce the likelihood of infection and colonization of the permanent wood, and disease control can be achieved preventatively through pruning wound treatment and curatively by remedial surgery. The latest research results to better understand the epidemiology of the diseases and strategies for managing them will be presented.
